Individuals are needed to work on a one to one basis teaching the English language to adults. As an ESL tutor you will be matched with someone who has immigrated to northwest Arkansas, or is temporarily residing here due to work or school. Our students come from more than forty countries, with many different native languages. No second language proficiency is required to be an ESL tutor - all instruction is in English. ESL tutors may also be paired with a student who needs help preparing for the U.S. Citizenship exam, with learning workplace specific vocabulary, or needs a conversation partner for practice and help with things such as pronunciation. Some tutors work with students who want to learn to read the English language. ESL tutor pairs often develop life long friendships that continue even after the student has returned to his or her home country. Many also exchange recipes and spend time comparing and learning about their respective cultures. It is particularly rewarding to start with an individual who speaks little or no English and work with them as they master, first the language, then U.S. culture and civics and finally become a citizen of the United States - as eight of our students did last year.
Our tutors must be over 18 and complete a tutor certification process that involves a half-day workshop and six additional hours of student specific training that takes place over the first six months of tutoring. This opportunity is sponsored by: Ozark Literacy Council, Inc.
