Having cancer is hard. Finding help shouldn't be. The American Cancer Society can help, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Description:
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through education, advocacy, research, and service. If you are looking for personal support you can log on to www.cancer.org and visit the online Cancer Survivor's Network, find out about the Clinical Trials Matching Service or get the most comprehensive up-to-date cancer information. If you want to quit smoking, or form healthier eating habits, or are wondering if you should have a particular test or screening, or have received a cancer diagnosis and just want to talk to someone at 3:00 a.m., you can call toll-free 1-800-227-2345 and talk to a real live person, a trained cancer specialist. Maybe you want to celebrate someone's survival, or remember someone who lost the battle, or give back by volunteering -we can help you find the most rewarding way to make a difference.
History:
The American Cancer Society was founded in 1913 by 15 prominent physicians and business leaders in New York City. In those days, cancer was rarely mentioned in public and the Society's founders knew that public awareness had to be raised if progress was to be made. Our mission of eliminating cancer has not changed and today we have more than two million volunteers nationwide, making the Society one of the strongest and most effective voluntary health organizations in the world. Progress has been made - mortality rates for some cancers, breast, colon and prostate, are on the decline. People are living longer from cancer and, in some cases, are learning to live with their cancer. Volunteers play a vital role in fighting cancer, by conducting screening programs, acting as grassroots advocates, driving patients to treatments, or by raising funds through Daffodil Days or Relay for Life - and so much more.
