One On One Mentoring Project Garner Iowa

Mission Statement: To provide mentoring relationships for identified at-risk youth that relationship building and social skill development, thereby, reducing youth substance abuse and other high risk behaviors and increasing development.

Description:
The Mentoring Project:

The One On One Mentoring Project is an extension of the Garner Asset Project. The program is designed to have a caring adult matched with a youth to support and help develop a mentee's social development, be a friend, higher grade achievement and other aspects of a youth maturing in our community. The One On One Mentoring Project has both school and community options for a mentor to select from. For school based mentoring the mentor and mentee would meet during the lunch and recess hour at the school to eat and play some games, talk or just spend time together. The community aspect of mentoring gives the mentor and mentee more freedom to do other interesting projects together. The guidelines for the Project are to meet four hours per month or one hour per week, which over times builds a trusting relationship between the mentor and mentee through consistency and mutual respect. All matches are same gender and one on one. The optimum goal of the program is to set up a match and watch them grow through the eighth grade under the project coordinator oversight and then remain friends through high school and beyond.

History:
The One On One Mentoring Project has been an ongoing aspect of the Garner Asset Project since 2004. The onset of the program was a community coalition of city and businesses coming together to enhance the opportunies of our community youth to grow for our future. The Mentoring coordinator position became a part time employed position in the November of 2006. The project has had up to 27 matches and currently maintains 23 to 24 matches and intends to continue it growth.
