Mason City Senior Activity Center

The Mason City Activity Center was established for senior citizens in the area to come together, to participate in programs, education, health awareness, activities and services to promote independence. A place where “GOOD THINGS HAPPEN EVERYDAY!”

Description:
The Senior Center, having served the North Iowa community since 1962, is the main community connection for more than 350 North Iowa citizens, age 55 and older. Many of the Center participants are persons on very limited, fixed incomes that, without the Center programming, wouldn’t be able to access services that keep their bodies healthy, their spirits nurtured, and their minds active. Examples of what the Center offers are exercise programs, sewing/quilting lessons, ceramics classes, subsidized travel and tour excursions to interesting places in Iowa and Minnesota, socialization activities (even dances) with other North Iowa senior citizens, card games, bingo, pool, a nutritious noon meal that provides 30% of their nutritional needs five days per week, participation in regularly-scheduled health screening and health info programming, tax preparation assistance, computer education, legal advice, celebrations and special events, and intergenerational activities with Mason City children and youth.

History:
Area senior citizens organized in 1962, as the Mason City Senior Citizen’s Association. The intent of the organization was….. and remains…to provide a meeting place for social, recreational, and educational needs of persons age fifty-five and older. The “Center” has relocated a total of 9 times in its 45 years of operation and, since 1992, has occupied its current location at 326 4th Street NE in Mason City. The current Center meets ADA standards and safety standards and comfortably accommodates the increasing demands of our expanding programs and senior population, serving over 350 individuals on a weekly basis.
