North Iowa CASA program provides trained community volunteers to speak for abused and neglected children, in court. Volunteers follow these children's cases as they move through the court system, making sure children do not get lost in the system. The CASA volunteer researches the case, learns everything about the child's special situation and presents their findings to the juvenile judge regarding the child's best interest. CASA volunteers help to make sure abused and neglected children are able to live in safe, permanent homes. CASA volunteers help children have the chance to reach their full potential in life. "As a judge, I had to make tough decisions. I had to decide whether to take a child from the only home he's ever known, or leave him someplace where he might possibly be abused. I needed someone who could tell me what was best for the child- from the child's viewpoint. That's what CASA does." - David Soukup, Founder of CASA By handling only one or two cases (compared to a social agency caseworker's average load of 60-90), the CASA volunteer has the time to explore thoroughly the history of each assigned case. The volunteer talks with the child, parents, family members, neighbors, therapist, school officials, doctors and others involved in the child's background who might have facts about the case. The volunteer then reviews all records and documents pertaining to the child. He or she then submits a formal report to the court making recommendations. "Most children in my court aren't delinquents. They're little kids - victims of abuse or neglect. They need your help and so do I." - Juvenile Judge Gerald Magee, Iowa 2nd Judicial District
A CASA volunteer works with confidence under the supervision of the CASA Program Coordinator. All CASA volunteers are thoroughly trained in courtroom procedure, child welfare services, the juvenile justice system, and the special needs of abused and neglected children . We welcome volunteers from all cultures, professions, and ethnic and educational backgrounds. CASA volunteers are men and women who want to help their community's children. They are committed caring adults interested in children's rights and needs. If you are an independent thinker and good communicator, and are able to use good judgment in difficult situations, the CASA Program is an excellent opportunity to use your talent and skills. Volunteers must complete screening requirements (criminal history check, background investigation, personal interview, references check), complete 30 hours of pre-service training, be interested in the welfare of children, have good verbal, written and computer skills, have a flexible daytime schedule and time to volunteer. A one year commitment to a children's case is requested. After their initial review of the case, a CASA volunteer can expect to spend approximately 7-10 hours per month working on their case. This time may vary greatly depending on the dynamics of the assigned case. Time given will be at the volunteer's convenience, except when a court hearing is scheduled for a specific day and time. Most CASAs have full or part-time jobs and can still find time to meet their court related volunteer responsibilities.
