Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for those affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer's. Our service area includes greater Sioux City, northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southern Union County, SD.
Description:
Alzheimer’s disease is a fatal disorder that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. Over 5 million people in the U.S are living with the disease: one out of eight people age 65 and older, and one out of two of those over age 85. Deaths from Alzheimer’s disease are increasing: it is now the seventh leading cause of adult deaths in the U.S. and the fifth leading cause of death for those over the age of 65. While there remains no cure for Alzheimer’s, much can be done to support those living with the disease and their family members, to maintain personal dignity and quality of life, and to keep families together for as long as is safely possible. Even younger adults can take proactive steps to preserve brain health and reduce their future risk. This is what the Alzheimer’s Association is all about. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for those affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. We do this through the provision of a variety of services to help individuals, families, and caregivers who are struggling to meet the many challenges presented by Alzheimer’s disease.
History:
Established in 1980, the Alzheimer’s Association, a world leader in Alzheimer research and support, is the first and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments and an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s. The work of the Association is carried out throughout the United States via its 78 locally-based Chapters. The Big Sioux Chapter, established in 1987, is one of these chapters. Based in Sioux City, Iowa, the Chapter serves residents in 21 counties in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
