Girl Scouts of the USA was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts' membership has grown from 18 members in Savannah, Georgia, to 3.6 million members throughout the United States, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and in more than 80 countries through USA Girl Scouts Overseas. Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa serves over 2,500 girls in the Siouxland area. Girl Scouts provides a place for all girls ages five through seventeen. Girl Scouts is designed for every girl, everywhere. It is girl-driven, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of participating girls. Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. It provides girls with a wide variety of opportunities. The program encourages increased skill building and responsibility, and also promotes the development of strong leadership and decision-making skills. Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa services 70 counties in the tri-state area of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, including ten in the Siouxland area.
