Western Mental Health
To promote and advance mental health with mental health or related needs, and to provide collaborative and educational services to the community. Volunteers are needed to be neighbors and provide emotional support to elderly community members struggling through a tough time.
Description:
Western Mental Health Center (WMHC) serves a five county area including Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Redwood, and Yellow Medicine counties. Services provided include: therapy, consultation, and public education. WMHC provides consultation services, public education opportunities, and professional in-service training for program participants. There are several programs including Community Support, Family Community Support, Day Treatment Services, Children's Therapeutic Social Services, Partial Hospitalization Program, as well as, The One to One Programs that are housed here. The One to One programs utilize volunteers to act as peer counselors providing emotional support to the growing number of older citizens in our area.
History:
Western Mental Health Center is a 501c3 nonprofit organization founded in 1958. Over the years, WMHC has tried to express an inclusive philosophy of concern for early intervention and prevention of mental illness, as well as, its treatment. WMHC has nine board members, fifty full-time staff, 5 part-time staff and 20+ volunteers. The emergency toll free number for crisis intervention is answered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
