The role of the advocate is to act as a support person for the victim of crime by: • Responding quickly, sensitively, and knowledgeably to crisis calls. • Empowering victims to help them take charge of their lives. • Supplying information to victims regarding options for legal, medical actions, and law enforcement procedures. • Referring victims to appropriate agencies. • Accompanying victims through legal, medical, and law enforcement processes. • Staffing the crisis line from 4pm through 9am each weekday and from 4pm Friday through 9am Monday on a rotating basis. • Making a verbal report to NHCC staff when the office opens in the morning. • Making a written report of crisis calls in a log book. • Recording victim information on a contact sheet.
An advocate must be at least 18 years old. • And advocate must be willing to operate in a manner consistent with the values and philosophy of New Horizons Crisis Center. • An advocate must successfully complete an initial 50 hour in-service training and acquire 6 hours of continuing education training thereafter. • An advocate must have a valid driver’s license and be prepared to meet victims at the Emergency Room and Law Enforcement agencies in each county (Lyon, Murray, and Redwood) within our service area. • An applicant must complete the volunteer application and all corresponding forms, including a criminal background check and a contract.
