Big Buddies Mentors are adults in the counties of Lincoln, Lyon, Redwood, Cottonwood and Jackson who realize how important it is for children to have positive, caring adults in their lives. The greatest skill is a deep desire to make a difference in the life of a young person. Second to that is a commitment to spend 1-3 hours a week with the youth for a period of at least one year. Mentors are kind, concerned adults - young and old and from all walks of life - who offer youth support, guidance, encouragement, and time. Mentors are matched with youth who share similar interests that may include reading, gardening, bicycling, outdoor activities, cooking, crocheting, watching movies, attending sporting events, and many, many more avenues of sharing time and learning experiences together. Mentors commit to spending 1-3 hours per week for a minimum of one year with their matched youth. Before becoming a mentor, adults complete an interview, screening and background check, and initial training. As a mentor, they also attend quarterly training and support opportunities with other mentors in the program. Although the specific requirements of a mentor varies, there are no age or physical limitations for who can be a mentor. This opportunity is sponsored by: Big Buddies Of Western Community Action
