The mission of the Richland County Public Library is to meet our citizen's needs for reading, learning and information.

Description:
RCPL is recognized as a leader among libraries in the Southeast due to our leadership, innovative programming, outstanding staff and our active Friends of the Library organization. In 2001, RCPL was recognized as National Library of the Year.

RCPL has a main library and 10 branch locations.The library is governed by a 10 member board of trustees each serving a 4 year term and appointed by Richland County Council. RCPL receives a majority of its funding from tax millage with additional funds from fines, State Aid, grants and individual and corporate donations.

History:
The first public collection of books in Richland County was in 1899. In 1929, the library began receiving public support from Richland County. In 1934, the library became known as Richland County Public Library. The first library location was Washington and Sumter Streets. Several branches opened from the 50's to the 70's. The current Main Library, the expansion of existing branches and the opening of two new branches occurred in the early 90's due to voter approval of a major bond referendum.
RCPL continues to expand its programs and services to meet the needs to all the community.
