Through the Girl Scout Leadership Development Model which consists of activities built around three leadership keys (Discover, Connect, Take Action) and employing the processes of being girl-driven, learning by doing and cooperative learning this model gives girls a unique experience in leadership development

History:
The Girl Scout Council of the Congaree Area was chartered in 1944 and originally served Fairfield, Lexington and Richland counties. In 1965 it added service to Lancaster, Sumter, Saluda, Newberry, and Kershaw counties, comprising the eight county service area which it serves currently. On May 1st of 2007, we realigned with two councils in the Upstate of SC to form Girl Scouts of South Carolina -- Mountains to Midlands, Inc. Our new council covers 19 counties in the upstate and midlands of SC, serving over 12,000 girls and working with approximtely 3000 adult volunteers. Here in the Columbia service area we serve 5800 girls and work with approximately 2000 adult volunteers. Program is delivered through troops (425), council sponsored events (with 20 community partners), day camps, summer residential camps, book clubs and school and community based afterschool programs. Programs providing special outreach to underserved populations include our Hispanic Initiative, Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (working with girls whose mothers are incarcerated), and Girl Scouts in Detention Centers. Each year our council participates in an education and community service project chosen by our older girls; past topics have included domestic violence, healthy living, bullying, and child abuse.
