Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 18, 2009

Mediation is a conflict resolution process in which an impartial, nonjudgmental mediator facilitates communication between conflicting parties. The parties decide the outcome of the mediation.
Volunteers at the Community Mediation Center mediate small claims cases in the Richland and Lexington County Magistrate Courts. Volunteers also can mediate family mediation cases and civil (i.e. landlord-tenant, neighborhood) cases.
When a conflict is resolved at the mediation table rather than in a jury trial, the parties save time, money, and stress. Generally 60% of magistrate court mediations are settled so that these disputes are not tried before a judge and jury. Mediation, as it works to create a balance of power between parties, can also restore relationships.
Mediators practice nonviolent communication and active listening.

All volunteers must have a 40-hour mediation training. The volunteer can already have certification as a mediator or they can take the training that the Community Mediation Center provides.
Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
