The mission of Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. In partnership with caring adult volunteers, girls discover (themselves and their values), connect (with others), and take action (to improve their communities and the world). We employ three processes in all of our activities -- girl-led, learning by doing, and collaborative learning. Using the Girl Scout Leadership Experience we help to develop a new kind of leader -- one who understands and values the collaborations so necessary in a global society. Girls have a number of ways to participate in Girl Scouting; they can participate in a troop, through camp, through travel and special events. This offers a wide variety of opportunities for adult volunteers, which are flexible and can be shaped to the volunteer’s interests and time commitments. Our “most wanted” position is that of troop leader or assistant leader which is a long term annual commitment working with a specific group of girls. We also offer positions for short term (3 – 6 months) and occasional volunteers (1 time events or episodic engagements). Positions are available working with girls directly at program events, camps, and sharing skills and interests at troop meetings. For volunteers preferring to work with adults, there are positions working with recruitment, management of troops and volunteer support. Council staff also utilizes volunteers for fund development events, assistance with clerical work, and helping with product sales. Whatever your expertise, enthusiasm, or time you have to share you can make a difference in the life of a girl – Volunteer with Girl Scouts!
Volunteers must undergo screening process which includes volunteer application, background check and references. All volunteers are given an online orientation. Volunteers wanting to be troop leaders or co-leaders are required to take two additional courses. These classes are presented in person, are available in several convenient locations and times, and are free.
