Richland One, along with United Way of the Midlands certified partner agencies Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia and Communities In Schools of the Midlands, have joined forces to assist Midlands children by recruiting at least 50 new volunteers by March 2008. The joint project, aptly named “Someone to Count On,” is seeking mentors, lunch buddies and tutors to volunteer with youth in Richland and Lexington counties.
“We all know that children need lots of support to make positive choices in their lives,” said Katy Watkins, Richland One’s volunteer and mentoring programs coordinator. “Studies show that children who have relationships with caring adults make better grades and are less likely to get involved in risky behavior. The Someone to Count On campaign strives to build more positive one-to-one relationships for children in our community. We’re looking for people willing to make a difference in the lives of children.”
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities to suit the schedules and interests of just about anyone. Volunteers are needed in schools during the week, but there are also opportunities in the evenings and weekends at various youth organizations. Don’t have a lot of time? Commitments are an hour of two for school volunteers or four hours a month at community programs.
Potential volunteers must be at least 18 years old, complete the enrollment/application process, attend the training sessions and be willing to build a caring and consistent relationship with a young person.
Richland One offers its gratitude to the other Midlands organizations providing assistance to the Someone to Count On Campaign, including United Way of the Midlands and Midlands Technical College’s business and marketing class. The project is funded by a grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation.
