In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration, Benedict College Service-Learning Program in collaboration with the School of Education’s Call Me Mister and Men in Black Scholars Programs will engage Saturday Academy participants in a day of service on Monday, January 21, 2008 in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Saturday Academy is a social and academic enrichment program for local elementary school children sponsored by Benedict College Service-Learning Program with funds provided in part by the Historically Minority Colleges and Universities Consortium. Benedict College Service-Learning Program Director, Tondaleya G. Jackson said, “Through the Service-Learning Program, the College continuously seeks ways to become change agents for residents in the surrounding community.”

Keeping in step with the College’s commitment to serve the community, Saturday Academy student participants will engage in a day of service at Chisholm Outreach Ministries, Inc. in Columbia, SC.  Pastor Marilyn Chisholm, Executive Director of Chisholm stated, “The most important resource and concern are the children of this community, who will one day inherit and become the adults that must continue to transform this community into a better place to live.”  In addition to spiritual counseling and guidance, Chisholm offers food and clothing items to community members in need. The MLK Day of service will include stocking pantry shelves, organizing clothing items, and sorting donations. Students engaging in service will celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King making the King Holiday “a day on,” not “a day off.” Saturday Academy participants and parents are excited about this opportunity to take part in a structured MLK event.
