American Red Cross
Mission: The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its congressional charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. The fundamental principles of the International Red Cross movement include neutrality, non-discrimination, alleviating human suffering, and welcoming all volunteers.
Description:
The American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area is the locally chartered service delivery unit of the federally chartered American National Red Cross. The first area chapter was formed in 1917. We have evolved from four separate chapters originally chartered and have developed, through mergers, a more efficient service unit to respond to the emergency needs of the communities we serve in Scott County, Iowa and Henry, Mercer, Rock Island counties in Illinois. Since 1889, Red Cross has had a presence in the Quad Cities area, meeting emergency needs while becoming a premiere provider of health and safety education.
The granting of a Charter from the American National Red Cross imposes minimum operating standards including governance, fiscal operations, and programming. Part of the governance requires the maintenance of a volunteer Board of Directors who serve without compensation. Fiscal management of a chapter requires there to be an annual independent audit by a recognized Certified Public Accounting firm.
The American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area has almost 700 volunteers and 15 full-time staff members who provide Red Cross programs and services to Scott, Rock Island, Henry, and Mercer counties. Last year, Red Cross workers responded to 133 single-family fires and other disasters; provided emergency communication to 522 military families and trained 20,735 youth and adults in CPR, first aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and water safety. Red Cross workers also educated 5,997 individuals in HIV/AIDS education and awareness, and provided education and leadership opportunities to thousands of Quad Cities area youth.
All American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. Our revenue sources include the United Way, grants, contributions of individuals, and corporations, and health and safety course fees.
