Habitat For Humanity
Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to build, simple, decent, affordable housing and improve our community so all people can live as God intended.
Description:
Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities helps people who need a decent place to live. The organization gives hand-up and not a handout by providing an interest free mortgage to partner families (people who will live in the house). The partner families must complete 250 hours of "sweat equity" as part of the process. Volunteers help in every aspect of the process and come from churches, individuals, foundations, corporations, businesses and other community groups.
History:
Since its founding in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International has built and rehabilitated more than 250,000 houses with families in need, becoming a true world leader in addressing the issues of poverty housing. The Quad Cities affiliate was organized in 1993 as a direct effort of a group of Quad Citians who traveled to Homestead, Florida to assist with home building efforts after Hurricane Andrew. Since that time, HFHQC has more than 54 homes completed or in progress.
