Girl Scouts Of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
Description:
Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois covers 7 counties in Illinois and 31 in Iowa. We currently serve over 20,000 girls, with the help of 5,000 registered adult volunteers. Girl Scouts provides comprehensive programs that promote positive personal and social development of youth including: community service, educational programming, and activities that give girls the important life skills and address their interests. We focus extensively on providing girls the information and tools they need to deal with issues that affect youth today. We strive to serve all girls regardless of race, religion, or socio-economic background. Trained volunteers and structured program activities help girls build self confidence, self-worth and skills they need to succeed in life. The progressive nature of the Girl Scout experience allows girls to assume age-appropriate increased independence in planning, implementing, and evaluating their own activities. The Girl Scout program reflects the ever-changing needs and interests of girls today. The program allows girls to increase skill building and responsibility, and develop strong leadership and decision-making skills. All program activities are age-appropriate and based on four program goals: to develop self-potential, relate to others, develop values, and learn how to contribute to society. Girl Scouts at every age level participate in real-life experiences that better prepare them for their future.
History:
Juliette Gordon Low organized the first group of Girl Scouts on March 12, 1912. In 1973, Girl Scouts of the Mississippi Valley was formed. The council realigned and joined 3 other Iowa councils on May 1, 2007 and now operates as Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois. The world’s preeminent organization, Girl Scouts is dedicated solely to girls, all girls, where in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world.
