Putnam Museum/IMAX Theatre
The Putnam Museum inspires ideas, dialogue and interaction among people of all ages through entertaining experiences that connect them to history, cultures, nature and the environment by preserving collections and presenting educational programs, IMAX films and exhibits.
Description:
The Putnam is a "learning magnet" for people of all ages. Last year we reached over 170,000 people - 45,000 of them were school children and teachers. To enhance learning opportunities and make them fun and memorable, the Putnam has the unique ability to utilize artifacts; giant screen films; hands-on programs; live animals; 3D classroom tools. We focus on fostering appreciation for our connections to world cultures past and present and immersing visitors in the wonders of the natural world that surrounds and unites us. Recently, we have brought exhibits about Climate Change; GPS technology; ancient Egypt; the Civil War in our area; Predators; and others. We've presented IMAX films about the Grand Canyon and water conservation; life in the oceans; the Alps; dinosaurs; dolphins. We conduct summer camps and a weekend science club for children. We host a World Adventure film series.
History:
The Putnam Museum was founded in 1867. From its early days, it was a place devoted to preserving our region's history and providing enrichment opportunities for all. In the mid-1960's it moved to its present location in Fejervary Park at the top of the Division Street hill. In the spring of 2002, the IMAX Theatre opened as the only 3D IMAX from Chicago to Council Bluffs and St. Paul to St. Louis. The Putnam is the largest, most visited, cultural venue in our region. The Putnam has always been a privately funded entity. The number of staff serving our visitors is 40% less in 2009 than it was in 2006. Volunteers are most important to the Putnam's ability to present quality exhibits and programs to our community residents and our out-of-town visitors.
