NAMI - National Alliance On Mental Illness, York County
NAMI's mission is to support, educate & advocate for individuals with mental illness and their families. NAMI believes that the key concepts of recovery, resiliency, and support are essential to improving the wellness and the quality of life of all persons affected by mental illness.
Description:
We provide numerous support groups for persons who are living with a mental illness and their families. Our education programs include: a 9-week Peer to Peer course, a 12-week Family to Family course, a 10- week Provider course, and a 3-hour "Hearing Distressing Voices" presentation. Staff and volunteers promote mental illness awareness in the community through special activities and speaking engagements. Advocacy on mental health issues is done on a local, state and national level.
History:
NAMI York County has been in York County for over 25 years as a volunteer-run organization. In January, 2007, NAMI received funding from MHMR to open an office to better serve the mental health community. The current staff consists of a full-time executive director and a part-time program/administrative assistant. NAMI York County is an affiliate of NAMI PA and NAMI National. There are over 1100 affiiates across the United States.
