Agency Details:

Paterson Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies

Paterson Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (PHMHB) was established in 1985 by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services as an initiative to reduce infant mortality. PHMHB serves a diverse population through community outreach and education. Our agency promotes healthy living and increases awareness of pertinent maternal and child health issues within New Jersey's most ethnically and racially diverse community.

We are committed to:

  • Reducing infant death
  • Reducing the incidence of low birthweight babies
  • Reducing the incidence of adolescent pregnancy
  • Increasing the percentage of women receiving
prenatal care

Description:
PHMHB is a Coalition of maternal and child health professionals in the public and private sectors - provider associations, national and community based organizations, policy makers, educators, advocates and parents. As an affiliate of the Northern New Jersey Maternal/Child Health Consortium and funded by the State Department of Health and Senior Services, the Coalition members collaborate on important initiatives and share their expertise at meetings, conferences, and in publications.

The Coalition provides networking opportunities to achieve our maternal and child health goals by linking health providers, administrators, policy makers, advocates and families through a variety of initiatives designed to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.

History:
Paterson Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (PHMHB) was established in 1985 by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services as an initiative to reduce infant mortality.

In September 1997, PHMHB became formally affiliated with the Northern New Jersey Maternal/Child Health Consortium.

This union was prompted by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services in their effort to link programs with common goals. PHMHB's mission, since its creation in 1985, has been to decrease infant mortality in a city (Paterson) at risk of poor pregnancy outcomes. The Northern Consortium was established in 1992 to improve the health of women and children in Bergen, Essex and Passaic Counties. By combining staff and sharing board and committee members, the two entities gained new perspectives and enhances manpower to achieve their goals.
