Grassy Waters Preserve seeks to expose people to the beauty of South Florida's natural environment, especially our wetlands, and to encourage water conservation through enjoyable, nature-based education and creative activities for all ages.
Description:
Grassy Waters Preserve is a 20 square mile wetland preserve. It is an excellent example of Everglades habitat and provides views of wildlife including alligators, wading birds, and more. An accessible boardwalk meanders through the marsh and swamp.
The visitors center provides information and activities for all ages. We need volunteers to help with educational programs, to help set up and work at various events and activities at the preserve, and to serve as interpretive nature guides. Training is provided.
History:
Grassy Waters Preserve is the Water Catchment Area for the City of West Palm Beach. It was purchased by the City in 1955 from the Flagler Water Systems Company. In 1964, it was given special protection for use as a water supply. In 1995, the nature center was completed for the City's goal to provide public conservation education.
