Jonathan Dickinson State Park
The mission of the Florida Park Service is to provide resource-based recreation while preserving, interpreting, and restoring natural and cultural resources.
Description:
Jonathan Dickinson State Park is located in Hobe Sound, FL, just south of Stuart. With over 11,000 acres, this park contains 15 natural communities including pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub and the beautiful Loxahatchee River, Florida's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River. The Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center in the park is a visitor's center with exhibits that highlight the park's wildlife, plants, and amazing natural and cultural history.
History:
The Florida Park Service has been in existence since 1935. There are currently 600,000 acres of land in the Florida State Park System in over 150 units of state parks, preserves, reserves and historic sites. Jonathan Dickinson State Park was designated as a state park in 1950, after the deactivation of Camp Murphy, a top-secret radar-training school during World War II. The park has a rich history including Jonathan Dickinson's shipwreck in 1696, the Battle of the Loxahatchee during the Second Seminole War in 1838, the life of Trapper Nelson, who became known as the "Wildman of the Loxahatchee," Flagler's Railroad constructed in the late 1800's, and Camp Murphy of World War II. Today, park visitors can explore the park through cycling, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, or on a tour boat to Trapper Nelson's home. The Environmental Education and Research Center at Jonathan Dickinson State Park is the first of its kind in the Florida Park Service and will serve as an education center for groups and individuals of all ages. The center will also be a place for research with students and partner organizations and a place for the community to meet and enjoy the park.
