Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. Rallies Volunteers to Participate in Community Projects as Part of the 2010 Great American Cleanup: Green Starts Here Americans now more than ever want to do their part to improve not only their own community, but our planet as well. Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc. is reminding Palm Beach County residents that Green Starts Here, with each volunteer and group that joins us to participate in Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup™.
Here in Palm Beach County and across the nation, the 2010 Great American Cleanup is reminding families that a better environment for us all starts in our own communities, and the work we do in our own backyards and towns affects our entire planet. Our volunteers are joining millions of others across the country to rid our streets, waterways and public spaces of litter and illegal dumpsites and we’re greening-up parks, schoolyards and other public spaces. For us, Green Starts Here. “For each of our millions of volunteers nationwide, ‘green’ starts with his or her decision to help clean up the local park or the abandoned building lot, or the community garden or any of the hundreds of sites across the country where volunteers work to better the community,” said Matthew McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “We’re reminding our friends and our neighbors that ‘Green Starts Here,’ but the impact we have goes beyond our town borders.”
Lourdes Ferris, Executive Director of Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Inc., expects more volunteers during this year’s Great American Cleanup event. “Last year over 5,000 volunteers participated in Palm Beach County. Community awareness of the importance of the environmental impact of litter and keeping a healthy balance of trees and other plant materials has swelled the volunteer ranks every year.”
The Great American Cleanup takes place every year between from March 1-May 31. This year, an expected 3 million volunteers will get involved and let “green” start with them by participating in 30,000 community improvement activities and educational workshops happening in over 17,000 communities nationwide. All will spread the message of individual responsibility to keep America’s communities clean, green and beautiful. In Palm Beach County, the official date, is Saturday, April 17, the weekend before Earth Day. There are also some alternate dates. Volunteers are encouraged to visit the Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful website at www.keepPBCbeautiful.org as the event gets closer to view the dates and sites and pre-register or call (561) 686-6646 for more information. All supplies will be provided and commemorative t-shirts will be given away to volunteers while supplies last. Community service hours will be given.
