Emergency - Be the first to assist in the Special Needs Shelter with specific care needs as it applies to the Alzheimer's, Dementia evacuee under the auspices of Alzheimer's Community Care Day Care Program, enabling the Shelter to operate at the highest level of quality and care in an emergency
Qualifications:
- Compassion with the understanding that an emergency situation may create confusion for the Alzheimer's patient
- Unconditional respect, and patience, with the ability to be accepting of the patient as a unique and special person regardless of his/her behavior at any given moment
- Empathy with the ability to understand how frightening and frustrating it must be to have progressive memory loss
- Genuineness with the ability to treat those with memory loss as dignified adults who have lived full and meaningful lives
- Dependability to be present when and where directed, follow directions from supervisors
- Be able to communicate with supervisors; and other team members
- Time commitment will vary. Can involve long hours and be activated at any time, ability to serve with little advance warning on a disaster operation
- Ability to work indoors in an emergency situation
Duties:
- Greet or check in of arriving evacuee patients and families
- Set up of activity materials
- Set-up, serve, and clean-up of snacks, lunch, and dinner, according to shifts
- Assist patients in activities as requested by Supervisor/Designee
- Assist departing evacuee patients and families in collecting belongings
- Return materials to appropriate storage space
- Assist in bedtime needs
- Record hours served on Volunteer Sign in/ Sign out sheet for each day
- Assist with any other duties assigned
Responsibilities:
- Always notify a supervisor, if assistance is needed in an emotionally or physically stressful situation
- Be able to commit to shift and days
- Attend volunteer training to participate in Emergency Care for an Alzheimer's patient
- Strict confidentiality must be adhered to regarding shelter attendees
- Volunteer must be able to abide by county regulations regarding shelters
- HIPA rules & universal precautions will apply
- Bring personal special dietary, water& medical needs for self
- Volunteers must assume responsibility of risk to their person
