1) Learn and Serve America & The Corporation for National and Community Service pay tribute to the most outstanding participants in our community with the annual Spirit of Service Awards. It is important to continue to highlight and recognize our best students, educators, and programs as exemplars of effective practice. 2) CiviConnections is a nationwide grant program linking local history with community service-learning. Students choose an issue or need in their community, investigate the issue through community and national history, then design and implement service-learning activities to address the need and strengthen their community. Also, three teachers can receive a $7,000 grant to cover the cost of attending a summer workshop, implementing the program during the 2006-2007 school year, and attend the National Council for Social Studies Annual Conference in Washington, DC. 3) Katrina's Kids Community Service Grant - in conjunction with National and Global Youth Service Day, April 21-23, seventeen $1,000 grants are available to young people (ages 5-25) to implement sustainable relief projects supporting the hurricane relief efforts in the Gulf Region. 4) The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2006 awards. The Barron Prize honors young people ages 8-18 who have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet. Each year, ten national winners receive $2,000 to support their service work or high education. Please visit http://www.barronprize.org. Deadline is April 30.
