The mission of Center for Possibilities at Cerebral Palsy of NWI, Inc. is to improve the quality of life for young children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.
Center for Possibilities at Cerebral Palsy of NWI, Inc. believes that a person’s worth is not diminished by a disability and that people with disabilities are entitled to full life experiences.
Description:
The goals of Center for Possibilities is to:
·Increase level of independence/highest level of functioning of our students
·Decrease feelings of loneliness and isolation for students and their families
·Increase awareness of programs/services for people with disabilities and their families
·Increase community awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical and cognitive disabilities
·Decrease stress on families/caregivers providing long-term care of children/adults with developmental disabilities
Our programs include:
·Preschool Program for children age 3-5 with developmental disabilities geared towards Kindergarten Preparation with a focus on learning ABC’s, numbers, colors, and spelling along with fine and gross motor development.
·Preschool Program for children age 2-3 with a developmental disability focused on physical, social and emotional development while learning how to share, take turns and explore environment.
·Adult Program for adults age 22 and above with a developmental disability focused on the development of self-care skills, daily living skills and academic advancement.
·Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy to help each enrolled child develop skills to function to the best of their ability in the areas of gross motor, fine motor and communication skills.
·Summer Camp programs for children with disabilities who are enrolled in other programs during the school year.
·Respite Care provided to families while the child/adult attends our program.
·Marriage and Family Therapy Program that provides individual, family and group counseling and information on community resources for families raising children with disabilities.
·In-house library and resource center containing books and brochures on resources, services and issues related to disabilities.
·Media coverage and community events to increase understanding of people with developmental disabilities.
·Inclusion Summer Camp is partnership with the Hobart Family YMCA and The Bubel-Aiken Foundation to increase inclusion opportunities for children of all abilities.
·Volunteer Program to provide opportunity for the community to work directly with adults with developmental disabilities.
·Community outings to provide experiences for our clients outside of our Center and an opportunity for the community to interact with and learn about people with developmental disabilities.
·In-services for our families and community on services available to people with developmental disabilities.
·Family Council and Support Group Meetings for families to obtain support and encouragement for each other.
History:
In January 1964, a group of parents, frustrated that their adult children had no place to go after graduating high school, joined together and hired a supervisor to be in charge of a workshop type program for their 9 adult clients with severe Cerebral Palsy. In March of 1965, a nursery/preschool program with Physical, Speech and Occupational Therapy added to the existing program. In 1970 we moved to our present location in order to expand our services. In the early 90’s, we opened our doors to children and adults with all types of developmental disabilities. In 2003, the Adult Program was updated to include adult daily living skills and academics and the preschool program was modified to include a pre-kindergarten component. In March 2006, Cerebral Palsy of NWI, Inc. changed its name to Center for Possibilities and joined with The Bubel Aiken Foundation and the Hobart Family YMCA to implement an inclusion based preschool summer camp. In March 2007, we opened our Family Counseling Program to serve families raising children with disabilities who lack insurance benefits to obtain counseling elsewhere.
