The mission of the Porter County Aging & Community Services, Inc. (PCACS) is to be a nonprofit organization that provides for the basic needs of Porter County seniors, the disabled and low-income residents.

Description:
For over 50 years, PCACS has been serving as the safety net for those most in need in Porter County. PCACS provides transportation services to Porter County residents who need transportation to local senior centers, doctor appointments, work, grocery stores, etc. The transportation services PCACS provides are door to door, meaning clients can be picked up at their homes, dropped off at their desired destination and returned to their homes. Our drivers help the elderly and disabled get on the bus, carry groceries to their door and handle wheel chairs and car seats when needed. Our transportation program is open to the public and operates Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All reservations need to be made at least 48 hours in advance.

PCACS participates in the Senior Nutrition Program as the Congregate Meals Site Manager for Porter County senior centers. These Porter County sites provide a nutritious meal, along with socialization, exercise and wellness training (Monday through Friday) to Porter County seniors 60 and older.

PCACS has an Energy Assistance Program which assists low-income, Porter County households with winter heating and summer cooling expenses. The program helps those in need avoid service disconnection. PCACS also administers the Section 8 Housing for low-income, Porter County families to have adequate housing.

PCACS also hosts free Community Workshop Programs throughout the year. The Community Workshop Program is funded by Northwest Indiana Community Action. Workshop topics range from “How to Stretch Your Food Dollar” to “Affordable Housing Options in Porter County.” These presentations are open to the public and take place at the Porter County senior centers on weekdays throughout each month.

Our Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) invites Porter County adults 55 years and older to use their life experience and skills to answer the call of Porter County neighbors in need. RSVP matches interested seniors with over 50 not-for-profits, faith based and service oriented agencies throughout Porter County. They are matched by the agencies needs and the volunteer's unique skills, life experiences, likes and desires to acquire new experiences. Finally, PCACS assist local citizens with ramps through our Ramp Project. PCACS helps by repairing and/or building ramps for low-income seniors and/or disabled residents of Porter County.

History:
Porter County Aging & Community Services (PCACS) was first established, in 1953, as the Porter County Council on Aging and Aged. It is one of the oldest social service agencies in Porter County. In 1973, PCACS incorporated as a Not For Profit and was one of the first local agencies to join the United Way of Porter County. Over time, the agency's name changed to reflect its broader mission. While PCACS is the sole representative of the national system of Area Agencies on Aging in Porter County, it takes an array of federal, state and local funds to support the agency's mission.
