The Mental Health Association in Porter County has been promoting mental wellness in our community for over 50 years!

Description:
The Mental Health Association in Porter County is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote mental wellness in our community. This is accomplished through support groups, education and advocacy,and by striving to preserve the dignity and raise standards of living for individuals suffering from mental illness.

*Current programs:
Support the needs of widows and widowers through The Healting Hearts Grief Support Group. This facilitated group meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

Support and education for survivors of addictions of suicide, SOLAS is an 8 week "closed" program provided on an as needed basis.

*Support and education for family members and friends of persons with chronic mental illness;

*Teen mentoring program, BUG (Building Up Girls) Offers middle school girls with "at-risk" behaviors to be paired with "successful" high school girls. Guided by the Search Institute's 40 Building Assets, the program offers a structured monthly workshop. Mentors(volunteer high school girls) and Mentees (middle school girls)engage in after school activities both social and academic in nature. The bond established offers an invaluable support system to the mentee as she is making decisions, facing peer pressure and more.

Building Up Our Youth (BUOY) an extension of BUG program, reaching our adult community with tools to build healthy assets in our youth. Empower our youth and adult community to make healthy life-style choices.

Open Door Social Club - This group is social in nature and is open to all persons residing in Porter County, suffering from chronic mental illness. Members must be compliant with treatment.

Meals That Heal - A Volunteer supported program providing a monthly meal for the Open Door Social Club. The group meets, plans and prepares the delicious monthly meals.

*Health financial aid for qualified persons residing in Porter County. This is an emergency assistance program which provides up to a one month supply of prescribed medication. It is for mentally ill individuals, residing in Porter County, who may otherwise be unable to afford the necessary medication.

*Resource information - A comprehensive program providing information about mental health care providers in the community, support groups, services and other information related to mental wellness.

*Gift Lift - The gift lift provides over 1500 gifts to persons who are in need. Trees are set up in businesses, schools and churches throughout the county. Tags with "wishes" are hung on the trees.

 I've covered several events at MHA for local newspapers and have always been impressed at the interaction between clients and staff. There is a love and bond there rarely seen outside of very close families. A superb group of people in all ways.
