Family House
To reunite families that have been separated by the court system or through the Office of Family & Children. This time spent together allows them to continue bonding and growing as a family unit.
Description:
Family House provides two services.
- Supervised Parenting Time; occurs when the court feels that the parent(s),for a variety of reasons, need to see their children under the watchful eye of staff. Staff are trained to keep the children safe physically and emotionally. Staff monitors each visit and takes notes on the interaction. Reports are compiled and sent to the attorneys and case workers involved. Families visit for one or more hours each week.
- Transfer Service; this service provides a safe, neutral setting for parents who live apart to exchange their children for regular parenting time. Staff assists with scheduling and relays information pertinent to the parenting time. This saves children from being in the middle of possible arguments.
There are no residents at the facility.
History:
Family House was established in 1981 by the Porter County Court System. They realized that the children needed a safe homelike setting to visit with their parents. Formerly, families visited at a YMCA or a local church at the same time as many other families. The judges wanted families to have some private time under the watchful eye of a dedicated staff. That is how Family House came to be!
