To reunite families that have been separated by the court system or through the Office of Family & Children. This time spent together allows them to continue bonding and growing as a family unit.
Description:
Family House provides two services.
- Supervised Parenting Time; this is when the court feels that the parent(s),for a variety of reasons, need to see their children under the watchful eye of staff. Staff are trained to keep the children safe physically and emotionally. Staff monitors each visit and takes notes on the interaction. Reports are compiled and sent to the attorneys and case workers involved. Families visit for one or more hours each week.
- Transfer Service; this service provides a safe, neutral ground for parents to exchange their children for regular parenting time. This saves children from being in the middle of arguments in a divorced or never married situation.
There are no residents at the facility.
History:
Family House was established in 1981 by the Porter County Court System. They realized that the children needed a safe place to visit with their parents. Formerly, families visited at a YMCA or a local church at the same time as many other families. The judges wanted families to have some private time under the watchful eye of a dedicated staff. That is how Family House came to be!
