Our Mission is to provide supportive services and safe shelter to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their dependent children in Lake, Porter and Starke counties, Indiana. We work toward the elimination of domestic violence by promoting an understanding of the causes and effects and by assuming a leadership role for social change in our community.
Description:
The Caring Place provides services and shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their dependent children from Porter, Lake and Starke counties. We also provide service to teens suffering dating abuse and sexual harrassment. All client services are free and confidential and are available to males and females, regardless of age. Our crisis line accepts calls 24 hours a day at 219.464.2128 or toll-free at 1-800-933-0466. Services include domestic violence counseling, safety and independent living planning, legal counseling and case management, needs assessment and support groups. These services are also available for non-shelter victims through community-based programs in each county. A 24-hour emergency response program offers support and information to domestic violence victims at local police departments and hospitals. The Caring Place provides volunteer training as well as volunteer programs for community groups. Prospective volunteers may call our Administrative office located at the Valparaiso Community Advocacy Center, at 219.464.0840 ext. 100.
History:
The Caring Place was incorporated in 1978 and opened its doors the following year at St. Bridget Convent in Hobart. The 24-bed shelter is now in an undisclosed location in Valparaiso. In late 2002, an Administrative Advocacy Center was purchased to serve the business and community advocacy needs of the agency.

Overall Experience

Very Rewarding

I love doing good deads for other people. I have found that the best way to heal is to help others. Helping other people makes me feel good about myslef. I can be very humble. Cleaning or babysitting would be fine. Taking care of a garden would be fun. The Caring Place gave me love and moral support during a very difficult time in my life. I would love to give back to a wonderful group of people. posted by poodlegirl on June 15, 2006 |
