The Central District Organizing Project's Field Organizer will supervise volunteers to mobilize, organize, register and educate Gary residents around various policy advocacy initiatives, including the Yes We Garbage Can campaign that fights the privatization of Gary's trash collection.

Key responsibilities include: 1. Develop and implement a door-to-door canvassing program in specific neighborhoods, including developing a canvassing schedule and maps, training volunteers, preparing materials and ensuring data collection.

  1. Develop and implement other forms of grassroots community contact, including public events, presentations to community organizations and schools, phone banks and mailings.

  2. Develop and implement community organizing strategies, including recruiting volunteers to canvass, make phone calls, provide rides and raise visibility at rallies, meetings and protests.

  3. Coordinate community awareness efforts, including community forums and meetings; and write articles and reports on our community organizing work. - Serve as staff liaison to the Central District Organizing Project.
    1. Knowledge of Gary, or experience with low-income communities, communities of color and young people
    2. Community Organizing experience (either as a volunteer or staff in community-based organizations or as a student activist)
    3. Electoral experience, including door-to-door canvassing, phone banking and managing volunteers
    4. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to listen and to build relationships with diverse groups
    5. Ability to work effectively with people from a wide range of income, education and ethnic/racial backgrounds
    6. Ability to delegate and manage multiple staff
    7. Commitment to long-term social change
    8. Strong organizational skills, including planning, tracking information and attention to details
    9. Computer Skills: - skilled on Microsoft applications
    10. comfortable with email and different forms of new media
