Celebrating Tacoma’s rich maritime heritage - past, present and future.
Description:
Tacoma's Foss Waterway Seaport will provide a hands-on connection to Washington's rollicking waterfront history by restoring the century-old Balfour Dock building and redeveloping the surrounding area into dynamic educational and recreational public space. The Seaport will inspire those who visit to experience the essence and feel the vitality of the working port - past, present and future. Imagine walking through interactive displays of the sights, sounds and smells of the early waterfront, its people and activities. Take part in on-the-water marine science exploration with budding oceanographers; build or restore a boat with grandchildren; attend a film festival, play or concert; visit a weekend farmer's market; or step back in time on a heritage sailing vessel. The historic Balfour Dock building will be the centerpiece of these activities. The goal of this project is to reconnect people in the Pacific Northwest to their working waterfront. The City of Tacoma’s Foss Waterway Development Authority and the Foss Waterway Seaport organization are dedicated to creating a variety of activities that bring the working waterfront to life.
