Kokua
Kokua:“To empower citizens with disabilities to lead full and meaningful lives”. The volunteer program: Help us make the world a better place, one life at a time. Volunteer and be a “Buddy” to an adult with disabilities. You can support a person with community activities, visit the library, attend church or achieve a lifetime goal.
Description:
Kokua is a Hawaiian word that means to cooperate, to assist, to support. Our name is reflective of our philosophy, namely that all persons should be acknowledged and respected regardless of ability level. As non-profit social service agency, we provide supportive services to adults with disabilities in Thurston County, Washington. Volunteers will support adults with disabilities in making decisions regarding their day to day life, as well as, the right to make friends of their choosing, the right to make affiliations based upon their personal beliefs, the right to participate in the life of their community: and to be seen as a full citizen, the right to meaningful work and the right to learn and grow and to take reasonable risks in the pursuit of their dreams.
History:
Kokua was founded in 1990 through the DDD (Division of Developmental Disabilities) and in 2001 started the 8th Avenue Advocates, a small disabilities rights group. In 2001, Kokua received the Morningside award for Outstanding Residential Provider. In 2002 Kokua received an award from Governor Gary Locke for our help and commitment to individuals with disabilities. In 2006, Kokua opened its doors and arms with a volunteer program. Volunteers must be 18 and be able to pass a background check.
