A relationship with a caring adult is recognized as the key ingredient for student success. Please help local students to build a bridge from high school to a positive, productive future.

The mentor's commitment is one hour per week, three times a month. Mentors must complete an information sheet, submit a resume, and fill out a questionnaire. All mentors must have fingerprint clearance and be TB tested, which is arranged through Janet Carroll in the districts Personnel Office. Most of all the mentors are paired 1:1. However, if a mentor wishes to work with more then one student they are paired with a maximum of two students.

Mentor qualifications include punctuality, open mindedness, willing to take a teen under their wing, provide academic encouragement, help with homework, and mentor a student a minimum of one academic year.
For more information on the Mentor/TIA Program, contact Alejandra Gutierrez, Santa Barbara High School Career Center, (805) 966-9101, extension 225, or agutierrez@sbsdk12.org

Description:
The benefit of having a mentor is that the student will get help from their mentor with their homework and school projects. The mentor will guide students on how to get active in their community, to expose the students to different opportunities that the community has to offer and most importantly how to start paving the way to college or a career. In time, a mentor will become a person with whom the student can establish a mature friendship, and receive advice and guidance to reach future academic and personal goals. Pairing up a student with a mentor from the community helps the student to have a sense of connection with their community.

Those students that participate will also get the chance to attend field trips and monthly meetings that are sponsored by the Morgan Stanley Financial Firm (one of the most important financial firms in the U.S. and the world). Students will meet for monthly presentations at the Morgan Stanley conference room. Students will also be invited to join the Job Shadow Program, where they get the chance to meet professionals in their career interest area as well as professionals working for the City of Santa Barbara.
