Hillside House's primary goal is to provide a healthy environment that supports our residents' efforts to maximize their own physical, mental, social and emotional abilities; to allow them to live in the least restrictive environment commensurate with those abilities, and to attain as high a level of independent functioning as possible.
Description:
There are few facilities in the state of California that support such a diversity of service for developmentally disabled individuals who require an intermediate level of care. Services include: 24-hour nursing care Individualized case management Independent living skills training Socialization and community outings Physical therapy/adaptive exercise Occupational therapy Speech/communication therapy Recreational therapy Expressive therapy Counseling Behavior intervention Sensory motor training Mobility aide program A variety of transportation options are available to all residents. Hillside House has three wheelchair accessible vans and two local companies provide additional transportation. Even the local bus service, MTD, has a bus stop at Hillside House. MTD also brings out-of-service buses to Hillside House for residents who need additional practice getting on and off the lifts. Our residents are able to take advantage of many cultural, educational and recreational events, as well as a variety of community activities, in Santa Barbara and the surrounding area.
History:
FOUNDING
The original Hillside House was founded in 1939 as a cerebral palsy care center located in Ojai, California. In 1944 Miss Muriel Evans, a London-trained nurse, who specialized in the care of the developmentally disabled, became director. Miss Evans had studied in Switzerland and Germany before coming to the United States at the behest of movie producer George Cukor, to care for Mr. Cukor's niece, who had cerebral palsy. Miss Evans was joined by Mrs. Joan Flanders, a physiotherapist from New Zealand. Together they sought and found an ideal Santa Barbara location for Hillside House, at 501 North Ontare Road and moved the organization to that spot. Under their direction Hillside House was developed into a cerebral palsy center similar to Sunfield Children's Home in Worcestershire, England. Fifteen residents, ranging in age from 2 to 18 years, comprised their initial enrollment. NON-PROFIT INCORPORATION In 1945 Hillside House was incorporated as a California Non-profit Corporation. Cecil Cooprider succeeded Miss Evans as Administrator shortly after World War II. The Board of Directors made plans for a larger facility, where they could house more residents and provide a wider variety of therapeutic services to the unique population served by Hillside House. Following a successful fundraising campaign from 1947-1949, negotiations began for the purchase of over 30 acres of land on Veronica Springs Road, known as "Pine Grove Farm". The purchase was completed in 1951. The Land and existing buildings were acquired for $55,000. NEW FACILITY COMPLETED Extensive efforts by Cecil Cooprider, his wife Loretta, and the Board of Directors, resulted in substantial donations from a wide group of people and organizations. Discounts on labor, materials, services and contractors reduced the project's cost. Construction of the new facility was completed in April, 1955 and the move was made from the Ontare Road facility to 1235 Veronica Springs Road.
