Channel Islands Restoration restores habitat in sensitive and unique natural areas on the California Channel Islands and adjacent mainland.
We help protect rare and endangered native plant and animal species by restoring the natural habitat they depend on for survival.

We help educate a variety of groups about the value of native habitat and how to protect it.
We recruit volunteers and help identify and develop public and private funding sources for habitat restoration programs.

Description:
The Santa Cruz Island Native Plant Restoration Project is part of a larger multi-phase project to restore the native plant communities of Channel Islands National Park, California, through removal of priority non-native invasive vegetation. Components of this project include developing and implementing the cooperative organizational structure, techniques, and educational tools which are urgently needed to help conserve the unique biological treasures of the Channel Islands.

History:
Channel Islands Restoration provides volunteer opportunities for conservation minded individuals at one of Californias most spectacular natural landscapes. This is a particularly wonderful opportunity for school or youth groups that emphasize education in ecology or have a service-learning component. Volunteers make single-day or multi-day trips to the island in areas not normally open to the public. They will receive hands-on experience with non-native plant removal while learning about environmental restoration, conservation biology and island biogeography. Participants also receive detailed information about the Channel Islands, including a slide show highlighting natural history, endemic animal and plant species and restoration issues.

Housing is provided at the UC Santa Barbara Reserve station in the islands Central Valley, and includes rooms with bunk beds and full kitchen facilities. Boat transportation to Santa Cruz Island takes approximately two hours from Ventura Harbor, and passengers often enjoy marine mammal sightings along the way. Trips to the island are typically one to five days in duration, depending on your group's requirements.
