The mission of our local chapter of AmeriCorps is to improve the reading ability (scores)of K-12 students performing below proficiency by providing reading tutors for targeted students to address the compelling community need for literacy improvement. (Help Kids Read!)

Description:
AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides thousands of Americans with education awards and living allowances for a program year of results driven community service. AmeriCorps members help meet local community needs in the area of education, human services, public safety and the environment. A local chapter of AmeriCorps is operated by the Santa Barbara County Education Office. Members serve at one site for the entire program year and tutor a targeted caseload of low performing readers.

History:
The Santa Barbara County Education Office is an intermediary agency between the California Department of Education and the 22 school districts and 2 community colleges that are located within the county's boundaries. It is our office mission to provide service and leadership in the areas of students, teachers and finance.
