Work with youth and educators in the educational benefits of stamp collecting. Work with private, public and homeschool parents/teachers, with scouts and other educational or extracurricular interests, throughout the world! Teach, assist and provide educators material to use stamps in their teaching curriculums.
Description:
Stamp collecting is an age-old hobby. It is fun, relaxing and educational. Stamp collecting is for anyone, regardless of age, income, nationality, gender, etc. We started this initially (on a dare) as a hobby to get kids interested in something besides video games and running the streets. Kids find stamps educational and fun; educators find stamps a great way to assist in teaching geography, history and culture as well as assist in improving research, reading and writing skills. Some kids have told us their grades have improved since they started stamp collecting.
History:
We started in 1993 as a hobby for an elementary class. The following year, they wanted to start a stamp club. Interest grew from there. We branched out into many schools. We started doing stamp shows where we set up tables for youth and educators to come in and acquire stamps and materials for school projects and classroom teaching tools as well as for their own collections. Soon individuals were inquiring if we were non-profit so they could donate money and stamp collections. We achieved temporary non-profit status in 1999 and permanent non-profit status in 2004! Over time, we developed a Youth Program and then an Educators Program. Upon request, we started teaching Basics of Stamp Collecting classes for families to give them a basis of stamp collecting, teach them all the technical terms and teach them how to care for their stamp collections. Yes, entire families were getting into stamp collecting! Some parents have come to us at shows and stated they and their sons/daughters have decided to start collecting stamps as their "family hobby" or "parent/child hobby." We conduct Educators Workshops to provide ideas, projects and materials to educators three times a year in California, Oregon and Washington. We started a Family Weekend in California in spring 2005; it was successful. We are working on a similar program for Seattle, Washington area for winter or spring 2007. We do stamp shows throughout Washington, Oregon and Northern California. We have educators scattered throughout the US and Canada. Youth members all over the world are interested in stamp collecting, including the Ukraine, Belgium and China. We provide a monthly newsletter and educational projects to members. Stamps and materials are donated, so we in turn provide them to youth and educators without cost. Donations of cash are always appreciated to help pay for general operating expenses, travel expenses, programs, etc. Our educators consist of private, public and homeschool teachers, scout leaders, day care providers ("something for the older kids"), stamp shows and clubs, and other youth interest groups. We are working on putting together a Continuing Education class which our educators are already looking forward to.
