CORE MISSION STATEMENT for The American Baptist Churches of Connecticut The American Baptist Churches of Connecticut are a gathering of congregations called to invite and encourage people to become disciples of Jesus Christ and proclaim in all areas of life the saving love and truth of God. MISSION ENDEAVORS The American Baptist Churches of Connecticut focus their mission in these areas: developing and equipping servant leaders among youth, adults, lay, and clergy for the local church and various ministries; inviting and encouraging people to become and grow as disciples of Jesus; providing specific assistance to churches at expressed points of need; building healthy and mission-oriented congregations and planting new churches; fostering faithful stewardship for local congregations, the Region’s ministry and the ABCUSA; encouraging the use and development of the facilities and programming associated with Camp Wightman; encouraging and supporting participation and partnerships among ecumenical and interfaith communities and other organizations.

Description:
Camp Wightman has been a ministry of the American Baptist Churches of Connecticut (ABCCONN) for almost 50 years with summer camping programs available for children, youth, adults, and families. Specialty camps include: Music, Canoe, Pioneer, Senior Adults, Adults with Special Challenges, Drama, Aquatics, etc. During the rest of the year, Camp Wightman hosts weekend and weekday retreats, conferences, and workshops for school groups, churches, and other organizations.
History:
Camp Wightman had its beginning with the decision of the Board of Managers of the Convention, at a meeting on October 15, 1948. A committee was formed to find a suitable site for a camp property. In 1950 the World Mission Crusade set aside funds to for the purchase and development of a campsite for Connecticut Baptists.
The Camp started life as a summer facility and has grown into a year round retreat/conference center with summer camp for kids, youth and Adults with Special Challenges. Camp Wightman is located in North Stonington, Connecticut, and provides year-round Christian hospitality and summer camping programs on 260 acres of land on the shores of Billings Lake.
