St. Vincent De Paul Place, Norwich
The mission of St. Vincent de Paul Place, Norwich is to serve those who are physically, mentally, or spiritually impoverished in the greater Norwich area.
Description:
St. Vincent de Paul Place is a hospitable refuge that welcomes those who seek food, companionship, and/or advocacy. Two meals, breakfast and a main meal at mid day, are served Monday through Saturday; about 250 meals a day. Food parcels for take home are distributed from our Food Pantry on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday; over 2000 meals weekly. When funds permit, we assist persons in emergency situations arising from the need for housing, utilities, medications, and transportation. Shower and laundry facilities are also available to address hygienic needs.
History:
St. Vincent de Paul Place first opened its doors on February 29, 1979 in the Shannon Building on Shetucket Street. Although a small beginning, the thriving center soon moved into a larger building on upper Main Street, next to the YMCA, offering a multifaceted array of outreach ministries. In 1999, the facility moved into the long-vacant former downtown train station, which to this day provides a much needed larger kitchen, dining, and storage space to expand meal and food pantry programs, and a host of other services for patrons.
