South Oakland Shelter Inc.
South Oakland Shelter (SOS) strives to provide temporary emergency housing to those in need and to remove them from the cycle of homelessness. SOS is a community advocate for finding effective solutions to the problem of homelessness and the need for affordable housing.
Description:
SOS’s program consists of two components: the temporary shelter component and the counseling and supportive services component. SOS’ program is unique in that over 65 faith-based partner organizations volunteer to fulfill the temporary shelter part of the SOS mission by providing lodging, meals and transportation on a weekly rotating basis throughout the year. The counseling/social service component of SOS’ program is aimed at removing individuals and families from the cycle of homelessness. This is accomplished in a supportive environment through the dedicated work of the SOS case managers who provide guidance, individual and group counseling and other supportive services.
History:
SOS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) emergency homeless assistance agency celebrating 23 years of service. It was established in 1985 by seven congregations in Oakland County to serve as emergency shelters for the homeless in the frigid Michigan winter months. In the intervening 24 years, this effort has grown to include over 65 congregations representing numerous faiths. Host site volunteers contribute approximately 50,000 volunteer hours per year. Presently, over 300 persons participate in this program annually; since its inception, over 10,000 adults and 1,400 children have participated in SOS's program. SOS is committed to serving each client with dignity, respect and confidentiality.
