Matrix Theatre Company fosters a community of creativity and social justice through the development and production of original theatre. It believes in the transformative power of art and the necessity of creating opportunities for diverse people to become the creators, producers and audience of original theatre.
Description:
Playbuilders: 8-12 year olds create new plays with the support of mentor artists using music, poetry, puppetry, painting, and dance. Teatro de la Vida: 12-14 year olds create and tour new plays which address important personal and community issues and build health self identity and positive social relations. Young Directors: Older teens and young adults learn to create community change through the power of original performance. Collective Playwrights Workshops: Teens and adults create new plays for production in our Mainstage series. Community Puppets creates giant puppets, masks, and short performances for a broad variety of indoor and outdoor venues and events. Performing/Writing Workshops uses the arts to enhance education throughout the curriculum in a wide variety of workshops, short courses, and residencies.
History:
Matrix Theatre Company has been fostering a community of creativity with children, youth, and adults of Southwest Detroit since 1991. It currently offers eight programs in which more than 1200 participants work with professional artists to create, perform, and produce new plays for an audience of more than 12,000 each year.
