Macomb Michigan State University Extension Youth Mentor Program

Michigan State University Extension's Youth Mentor Program serves at-risk youth through a one-on-one professionally supported relationship with caring adult volunteers. Youth Mentor focuses on meeting youth's basic developmental needs through mentoring and life skills training, thereby diverting them from costly levels of care and intervention.

Description:
Macomb Michigan State University Extension(MSUE) helps people improve their lives by putting knowledge to work. The Youth Mentor program matches youth referred by the Macomb Juvenile Court with adult volunteers 21 years of age and older. The volunteers are screened and trained prior to being matched with a youth. In addition to meeting weekly with the youth, mentors and youth meet together monthly at MSUE offices where support group meetings are held for mentors and youth learn various life skills. We also assist school districts develop peer mentor programs.

History:
MSU Extension was organized in 1912 when the Michigan Legislature authorized county boards of supervisors to appropriate funds and levy taxes to futher teaching and demonstrations in Extension work. In 1914, Congress passed the Smith-Lever Act, which created the Cooperative Extension Service and directed the nation's land-grant colleges to over see its work. The Macomb County Board of Commissioners established the Macomb MSUE in 1918.
