Bridging Communities Inc is a grassroots collaborative of Southwest Detroit businesses, labor organizations, churches and residents working together to create a society where people live together in tolerance, compassion, civility and respect. Building on the principles of democracy, empowerment, dignity, justice and equality, we believe that all life has value, from birth to death and that a full, meaningful and productive life is based on the level of our participation.
Description:
Bridging Communities provides referral services, case management, and social support for more than 200 frail senior citizens in Southwest Detroit within zip codes 48208, 48209, 48210, 48216, 48217. To provide this care, BCI recruits volunteers from schools, offices, civic groups, and factories as well as individuals of many ages and backgrounds. Some of these activities include:
- drive Senior Citizens to medical appointments
- deliver "Remembrances" several times a year
- deliver holiday Meals-on-Wheels
- plant flowers for Planting Friendship Day
- do home maintenance projects - plumbing , carpentry, electrical, construction
- clear, mow and maintain yards - through the Spring, Summer and Fall
- snow removal
- make friendly calls
- take Senior Citizens shopping, etc
History:
Bridging Communities began work in Southwest Detroit in 1980 as Project SAVE (Seek And Visit the Elderly). It was an effort by the clergy to cooperatively address the growing needs of increasing numbers of elderly in their congregations and the community at large. Today the organization, maintains its commitment to the at risk elderly with case management services that are supported with cadre of volunteer programs and support for caregivers.
