History:
Your American Cancer Society is the largest source of private not-for-profit cancer research funds in the United States, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. Our annual investment in cancer research has grown steadily from $1 million in 1946 to more than $100 million today. Since its inception, the Society has raised and delivered more than $2.3 billion for cancer research, Scientists supported by the Society have made great contributions. Among the highlights: *Established the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. *Developed the Pap test to detect cervical cancer. *Proved that lumpectomy plus radiation compared with mastectomy is effective against some breast cancers. *Dramatically increased cure rate for childhood leukemia. *Created hormonal therapy for prostate cancer. *Discovered genes that make people more susceptible to breast and colon cancer. Developed a variety of cancer-fighting drugs.
