Mission of Women ARISE is to provide women ex-prisoners with the education, training, counseling, soial interaction, and environment necessary to become productive members of society. The organization's working vision statement is to reduce recidivism through higher education, targeted job training, enhanced community supports, and stronger familial relationships.

Description:
Women ARISE is a reintegration program for females leaving Michigan's prisons. We have three major objectives: to operate a comprehensive reintegration program for women recently paroled or discharged from Michigan's prisons; to properly document, evaluate, and publicize the education/training/support reintegration model in all its specifics; and to develop and implement a public awareness program focused on the collateral consequences for children, families, and communities of present criminal justice policies and practices, as well as this model of reintegration, which offers greater effectiveness for life-stabilization and recidivism reduction.

History:
Women ARISE was founded on Detroit's east side in 1986. The agency was funded initially as a project by the Michigan Department of Social Services. From 1992-2002, Women ARISE functioned as a day reporting center for female offenders designeated for community based options under Public Act 511 funding. In 2002, Women ARISE conducted a thorough examination of all elements of programming with the sole purpose of more effectively meeting the myriad of needs of the women. One key innovative step was the formation of PROVE--which focuses on higher education as a means to higher quality of life and optimal method to reduce recidivism for post-release. This change was based on clear empirical data and research which demonstrated a direct relationship between offenders enrolled in educational programming and reduced rates of recidivism, as well as an overall enhancement of the quality of life for the individual and the community in which they are released.
