Volunteers Needed To Set-up And Serve School Breakfast And Lunch In Macomb County
Powered by Truist

The Initiative:
Basic Needs
Recognizing the strain put on the social service sector by Metro Detroit's climbing jobless rate, United Way for Southeastern Michigan is working to increase the capacity and efficiency of key social service delivery networks through our Basic Needs initiative. Basic Needs is simultaneously a response to the urgent need for immediate relief and a transformation of social service networks for long-term efficiency.

The Problem:
In 2008, one in 6.5 people in southeastern Michigan was food insecure, defined as not having access to three meals a day and relying on an outside source to provide food at least every other day. Due to growing unemployment in the region, research indicates that the number of food insecure is expected to double in five years. This means that in 2013, 1 out of 3 people in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties may not know where their next meal is going to come from.

Studies also conclude that 1 in 5 children are currently food insecure in southeastern Michigan. One of our goals is to increase the utilization of eligible students for free/reduced breakfast programs.

How You Can Help:
Volunteers are needed to support the school breakfast and lunch programs at Kennedy Elementary School in Macomb County.
Breakfast shift is from 7:30 a.m. until 8:15 a.m.
The lunch program shift is from 11:50 a.m. until 1:15 p.m.  Volunteers do not need to work both shifts.

Volunteer responsibilities include:
  • Set-up tables
  • Monitor breakfast and lunch lines
  • Opening food packages to be served to students
  • Pick-up and wash tables after breakfast  and lunch
Your support through volunteerism will ensure that students in these schools will have access to healthy, nutritious breakfast and lunch that they would otherwise go without.
