Project Linus - Las Cruces Chapter
Project Linus is a 100% volunteer non-profit organization with a two-fold mission. First, it is our mission to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers." Second, it is our mission to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children. Anyone, any age, can help these children. It is within your power to make a difference!
Description:
The Las Cruces Chapter of Project Linus is an all volunteer organization serving primarily Dona Ana County and outlying rural areas in southern New Mexico. People work alone or in groups making blankets and bring them to collection points. The blankets are inspected, sorted, and then given to children aged 0-18, usually through local hospitals and agencies.
History:
Project Linus was started by Karen Loucks in 1995. She saw a picture of a young girl in Parade magazine who was undergoing chemotherapy and said that her blanket had helped her through the treatments. Karen and her friends began making blankets for children in a cancer treatment hospital in Denver. The Las Cruces Chapter was started in 1999 by Linden Ranels. The first blankets were given to La Casa, the local domestic violence shelter.
